Yes, a student can change one or more subjects and even opt for one or two extra subjects after getting registered for a period of five years, provided that the total number of subjects opted by the student is not less than five and does not exceed a maximum of seven papers in which the student wishes to appear. NIOS is a board with the best facilities for the comfort of students for studying and a board that cares for the betterment of the student. The NIOS board is constantly coming up with new rules and programs to make studying easy so that students do not feel the pressure of studies and, at the same time, gain knowledge through their excellent and easy-to-understand syllabus.
NIOS offers its courses mainly in English, Hindi and Urdu medium. At the Secondary levels, apart from English, hindi, urdu you also have a choice of Telugu, Gujarati Malayalam and Marathi as other mediums for study.

At the national level there are three central boards – CBSE, CISCE and NIOS Board each have their own advantages and disadvantages. It is totally up to the students and his guardians to decide which board they will prefer for their kids to study. Education in India is very highly dependent on the content of the syllabus offered and most parents when choosing school for their child ignore the type of education provided by the school but rather giving priority to the syllabus it offers.
CBSE(central board of secondary Education) was founded in 1952 .This board is a regular board and the student enrolled in this board has to attend classes at his school. The main purpose of bringing this board into existence was to bring all school and colleges across India under one board so that every student has the same knowledge at all India level when he /she clears their board exams of class (X and XII ). This aim was achieved by bringing central school (kendra vidyalaya) into existence that would help the children of those government employees who have a transferable job that involve midyear transfers. The CBSE syllabus is well designed and keeps the students up to date by constantly revising the syllabus. The syllabus is designed by NCERT (National Council for Education Research in Training). The NCERT work is to constantly update the syllabus to keep it up to date with the latest trend in education. A number of changes have been incorporated lately, the prominent decision being to make board examination at the end of Grade -10 optional while the Grade -12 is (mandatory).
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) is a private, non-governmental board of school education in India. It conducts two examinations in India: the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and the Indian School Certificate(ISC). The CISCE was set up in 1956 at the meeting of the Inter-State Board for Anglo-Indian Educational proposal was adopted for the setting up of an Indian Council to administer the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate’s Examinations in India. It is an all-India, but not a government sponsored board (unlike the CBSE and NIOS). It is based in New Delhi.
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) reviews its course once in three years. A serious need for mainstream courses like fine arts and painting is felt. There are courses that have faced step-motherly behavior from other boards till now.
But NIOS School is looking to amend this in the interest of the students. NIOS being a central board, policies and procedures formed by it ought to be implemented by other boards at the state level too. The new education system prepared by the NIOS Board should be implemented by other boards as well. Under NIOS, students appear for six compulsory subjects in senior secondary, while under CISCE they have to take only four subjects. Special importance is given to subjects alike painting, home science or sociology which other boards like CBSE or ICSE have not given.
NIOS has now been one of the most prominent board of in India. The board has be approved and founded by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, government of India through resolution (No. F.5-24/90 Sch.3 dated 14 September 1990 published in the Gazette of India on 20 October 1990). It gives the freedom to the students to study from home. The syllabus is up to date as it is designed by NCERT (National Council for Education Research in Training). This makes the syllabus competent and equivalent to CBSE and CISCE boards. The students preparing for entrance exams have started preferring NIOS School as the mode of study to complete their Secondary and Senior secondary courses. The students these days start preparing for their competitive exams from class Xth/secondary level so this gives them ample time to study and concentrate on the competitive exam which they aspire to qualify. This is why NIOS is the preferred board these days by students over other board. The NIOS students gain the same knowledge as that by a student from any other board because the course content is equally competent and of same level as that of any other board. The students of NIOS board in fact score well and the pass percentage is higher than any other board.

The problem arises because universities ask for scores in five subjects for admission. We advise parents to motivate their students to take five subjects. The theory-practical ratio for evaluation under CBSE is 60:40 compared to the 70:30 under ICSE. “The CBSE ratio gives students the chance to score more, whereas the third central board- National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) – is all about facilitating students who are unable to pursue regular studies. The only difference between CBSE, ICSE boards and NIOS board is that it is flexible in the n choice of subjects. It is an open learning schooling and learners attend a contact learning programme for several months under stream1, 2, 3 & 4 unlike regular students. Therefore NOS sometimes gives ample opportunities to students as they get many chances to clear the examination. NIOS is identical to CBSE board in terms of curriculum.
NIOS Valid For Government Job
There is no re-evaluation or scrutiny for the Secondary Examinations. The National Institute of Open Schooling has introduced the re-evaluation of answer sheets at the Senior Secondary level. This will be in addition to the already existing system of scrutiny/re-totaling of marks for Secondary and Senior Secondary levels. Candidates who have appeared for the Sr. Secondary exams of NIOS in April-May or after can apply for re-evaluation of answer sheets in theory paper of any subject. There is no provision and procedure for re-evaluation in Practical exams.
Candidates can apply for re-evaluation for one or more than one subject through a single application. No second request for re-evaluation will be accepted. The application for re-evaluation is sent by registered post or speed post only to the concerned Regional Centre. The processing fee is to be submitted through bank draft drawn in favor of Secretary, NIOS payable at the city of the concerned Regional Centre. Candidates must apply for re-evaluation in their own handwriting within 15 days from the date of declaration of results. Incomplete applications and those received after the last date of submission will not be taken care of and will be rejected without any prior notice. The communication regarding the re-evaluation result shall be sent to the candidate within a period of 60 days from the date of receipt of application.
As the Class X and Class XII NIOS Board examinations results get declared, many students go for revaluation and re-examination marks. An increasing number of students avail themselves of these post-examination assessment procedures which can make their claim for good marks. Teachers scrutinize the answer script for revaluation, in comparison to initial evaluation which is done by one examiner. Generally around 10,000 students would apply for revaluation, while 1,000 for recounting. In today’s competitive world where every mark counts, teachers and parents encourage students to apply for the process if they are confident. In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, any good students who were confident of their exam performance went for evaluation.
Each accredited institution or coaching is supposed to organise Personal Contact Programmes (PCP) on weekends/holidays under the guidance of a facilitator, who is generally a scholar associated with the NIOS Board. During these sessions, teachers (teachers of the school if the school itself is a study centre, or those of a school working in collaboration with the study centre if it is an NGO) help students with the course work. Special practical classes are also held for the students who have enrolled for the particular subjects that require practical exams.
Upto a maximum of 30 PCP classes as per NIOS norms, will be organised per subject for theory and 5 additional for subjects having practicals on face to face basis, generally on weekends and holidays, in the first year of admission, by the AIs (Study Centres). First PCP will start on Ist Sunday of October i.e., 6th October 2014 at 9.30 am. for Ist Block of admission and on Ist Sunday of April i.e., 6th April, 2015 at 9.30 a.m. for IInd Block of admission respectively at your AI and thereafter on every Saturday and Sunday as per the time table prepared by the Study Centre. These contact classes are not meant for covering the curriculum. DO NOT EXPECT FULL TIME CLASSROOM TEACHING as in formal education system. The teachers are there to help and guide you with regard to your difficulties. It would be in your interest to attend all the contact classes. Attendance in five practical classes is compulsory.
There are no special text books prescribed by NIOS board, the study material provided by NIOS is more than enough for a student to gain knowledge and understand the subject properly. The books for NIOS are specially designed by NCERT (National council of Education Research and Training) so as to make the students understand the subject properly and gain maximum knowledge without any assistance.
Yes there is a compulsory class 11th in NIOS. It is mandatory to have a year gap between secondary and senior secondary level in NIOS board. The NIOS board never want its students to feel the burden of studies so it has come up with a unique idea that the student can appear to a maximum of 4 subjects of his choice for board exam in his class XI if he feels prepared for the subjects and can appear for the remaining subjects next year at senior secondary level. The certificate will only be issues when the student completes his senior secondary exams by passing in the minimum required subjects to get a pass certificate. This added advantage to students by NIOS board gives it an edge above rest of the boards like CBSE/ICSE/UP and other recognized board in India. The syllabus is in no less competent to any other board as the syllabus is designed by NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training).
The students preparing for competitive exams such as IIT or AIPMT or NDA etc are preferring to enroll at NIOS board as it gives them ample of time for the preparation of competitive exams as well as manage time to study for board exams as they can appear in some papers in class 11th and the rest in class 12th. These students don’t have to attend regular classes so they can utilize that time at attending coaching classes for their competitive exams.
The NIOS board has another program for the failed student or a debarred student due to short attendance or a student who due to any other personal reason was not able to pass class XI can get himself enrolled in NIOS and pass his class XII the very same year from NIOS board without repeating class XI.
There are many cases in which a student clears his competitive exams but fails to pass in board exams such students can take of a program by the name of ODE (On Demand Examination). ODE lets the failed student pass in his/her board examination within 45 days of enrollment. The student can also get his credit transferred from the previous board in which he/she scored well and does not want to reappear in it by taking advantage of a program especially for board failed students by the name of TOC (transfer of credit).
NIOS (National Institute of Open schooling) as the name indicates provides quality education for school level only. The NIOS does not provide any education at graduation level though its certificates for secondary and senior secondary level are approved to get admission in any university or institute all over India. NIOS is the most reputed and respected open school in the world with over 2.59 million students on its roll. NIOS is the largest open school in the world and is very popular in the commonwealth countries.
NIOS is in no way inferior to any other recognized board like ICSE/CBSE/UP board. NIOS board syllabus is designed by NCERT (national council of education research and training) so as to keep the syllabus up to date in comparison with other boards of secondary and senior secondary education. NIOS board has been brought into existence by the HRD (Human Resource and Development) ministry of India through a resolution which is written in the gazette of India dated 14/09/1990. The motto of NIOS is “sarv shiksha abhiyaan” which means education for all.
NIOS is only authorized to provide education at secondary and senior secondary level but not for graduation and post graduation level. The certificates issued by NIOS at secondary and senior secondary are approved by all universities and Institutes all over India. Association of Indian Universities, vide letter No . Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, Mumbai, Delhi, Kharagpur, Chennai and institute of Technology, BHU, Varanasi) recognize certificate issued by NIOS.
NIOS (as NOS) launched its first vocational courses in 1997-98 and has made significant progress since then. The following table outlines the growth of the operation and also points to the popularity of the offerings.
NIOS board is the most considerate board among all the other boards in world. Its main purpose to come in to existence is “sarva shiksha abhiyan” which means education for all. The NIOS board main motive was to increase the literacy rate by giving an opportunity to the school dropouts so that they can continue their studies from home .The NIOS has therefore intentionally not kept any criteria for age so that more and more dropout students start pursuing their education again. This has drastically increased the literacy rate in India.
The main reason for students to stop their education at school level is to earn a livelihood and support their family. The kids in order to learn some technical work join work at a young age because kids have a lot more grasping power than adults. To stop this dropout rate from school in order to learn some technical work the NIOS has started stand alone courses for secondary and senior secondary level courses separately which are given below

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November,1989 as an autonomous organisation in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. NIOS is providing a number of Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level. Yes, a two years gap is essential between passing of secondary and Sr. Secondary examination If a learner does not have the requisite gap of two years, he/she can appear in maximum of four subjects only in the first year. He/she will be eligible to appear in remaining subjects only on completion of two years gap.
This has come as a boon for the students as the students don’t have to appear in all the exams at once but can appear in some subjects the next year after secondary level and remaining the year later. A student can appear up to a max of 4 papers in the first year after secondary level thereby releasing the pressure of appearing in all the exams at once after two years unlike other prominent board.
Learners admitted to Senior Secondary Course must confirm that for the reason of getting a certificate at the Senior Secondary level, a two-year gap is mandatory from the year of passing the Secondary examination. If you do not have the required gap and interval of two years, you can then apply in a maximum of four subjects only in the upcoming April-May examination and subsequent October-November Examination. You will be eligible to appear in the rest of subjects only on finishing of the two years period.
In the condition where two years gap condition is not met, your examination fee will be managed and balanced for the first four taken subjects and the rest fee, if paid for other subjects, will be lost. Registration for a course is valid for five years from the year of registration allowing nine chances to appear in the public examination held two times in a year during this period. A two year gap is essential between passing of Secondary (class X) and Sr. Secondary (class XII) level. This means one can take the Class X and XII exams at any age without a barrier as long as one is above ten years of age, though one has to wait for two years between taking the Class X and the Class XII exams – do not know why they want this gap. Choice of subjects is again completely free as opposed to fixed combinations in a conventional school. NIOS recently introduced the On Demand Examination System (ODES) under which learners can appear for examination in any subject as and when they feel ready for it.
